when you first put files on your hard drive and they come together in a nice strip, all the files that you put on the hard drive are all nicely placed together, but as you start deleting and adding files they start to separate as the new files fill gaps left by old deleted files. This process is known as fragmentation, this makes it so that your hard drive can hold a maximum amount of information, it also makes it so that over time your hard drive starts to run slower and slower, Windows 7 will defragment your hard drive automatically about once a week, now say don't have Windows 7, or you want to defragment your hard drive more often than that, there is a way to do it manually.
You're going to make your way over to your computers start menu, then you can choose computer and right-click your hard drive icon and choose properties. When the window appears click the tools tab and then click on defragment now, then that disk defragment window should pop up, then click defragment disk to begin the process, once it's finished Windows will show you a report of the results, some of the files will be unable to be defragmented, such files may include files that are in use.
