There is more to baby skin care than meets the eye. Proper care of infant skin involves keeping the whole baby clean. It can take a newborn baby's skin a few months to adjust to life in the outside world which is why a newborn baby is more prone to skin conditions. Proper baby skin care involves making smart decisions all day long. Everything you do from dressing your baby to bathing her will affect her skin. Don't freak out yet--good skin care does not have to be complicated or difficult. With just some common sense it can be downright easy. If you need some help figuring out a good routine, here are a few hints to help you out.

In addition to using sunscreen on any part of your baby's skin that isn't covered in clothing, you should take extra care with areas like the baby's cheeks, nose, ears and lips. Zinc oxide can provide an extra layer of protection to your baby's face and ears when you take your baby outside. Don't forget to make sure that your baby always wears a hat when he or she is outside! There is no such thing as being too careful!

When you shop for baby skin care products read the ingredients carefully. Avoid any baby skin care products that have dyes, added fragrances, parabens and phthalates. All of these ingredients are irritants for baby skin and could cause your child to develop any number of skin conditions. After putting so much effort into keeping your baby's skin clean the last thing you want to do is cause irritation or other conditions to develop. The best products are those that are gentle on the skin. If you don't know which products are the best for your child ask your pediatrician for some hints before you go shopping again.

From birth to six months of life you will want to do everything you can to keep your baby out of direct sunlight because direct sunlight is too hard on your baby's skin. After your baby is six months old the direct sunlight won't be as big an issue but you still want to make sure that every milimeter of skin not covered with clothing or a hat is covered in strong baby friendly sunscreen.

Covering your baby's head with a hat and shading the two of you with an umbrella are extra precautions you can take. If your son or daughter does develop a sunburn (even with all of the precautions you have taken) you can treat it with a damp cool cloth a few times a day.

There are lots of ways to take care of your baby's skin. The truth is, however, that infant skin care is not as difficult or complicated as you think it is. In fact, if you choose the right products and practice some common sense, your baby should enjoy clean and clear skin with very few problems. Don't forget that there is more to baby skin care than caring for your baby's face. Keeping your son or daughter's skin clean and care depends on lots of little decisions you make all day long-but don't worry! It won't take long at all for keeping your child's skin healthy to become little more than second nature. After a while you won't even have to think about it. It will be almost subconscious!
