The manufacturing procedure for the organic asphalt shingle is the process where a natural felt substance (either recycled paper materials or wood) is reduced to a fine pulp, formed into sheets that happen to be then dried out, slice into strips, and placed on rolls. Fiberglass shingles are produced from a fibreglass strengthening mat. To make the pad, small glass filaments are chopped and blended with water to form a pulp, after which it is created into a sheet. Any leftover water will be cleaned out from the pulp and a binder is added.

The process of producing the asphalt shingles is the same for organic or fiberglass roofing shingles. To produce the shingles, a roll of either the organic and natural felt or the fiberglass mat is fed in to a dry looper. Asphalt is used in the manufacturing, but not necessarily in the same state as the asphalt used in asphalt pavement. Prior to using asphalt for making roofing shingles, it has to be oxidized. To do this, air must be bubbled through hot asphalt (when using the appropriate added catalysts) to result in a chemical reaction. This product is an asphalt that softens with the proper temperature ranges to produce a superior shingle. Following the oxidation method, mineral stabilizers such as finely ground limestone or ash are added to make the asphalt stronger. Intriguing fact, Gloeocaspa Magma which is a type of cyanobacteria feeds off of the limestone product and can form the black mold commonly seen on shingle roofs.

The slury then passes through a saturation chamber, where hot asphalt is then sprayed to remove any bits of moisture. Then, it is placed into a tank of hot asphalt to coat the fibers and fill any remaining holes. As the asphalt cools, it is drawn into the felt which ensures greater saturation, weather resistance, and UV protection. Then a hot coating of stabilized asphalt with minerals is then applied to the surfaces of the pad. Finally, a thin layer of minerals is applied to the backside surface of the mat and it is exposed to rollers to guarantee the minerals are pushed in to the asphalt. By now, the asphalt has cooled and the felt can enter the chopping apparatus. The roofing shingles are cutin the back side into a specified size and shape. The cut asphalt roofing shingles are then stacked into bundles, wrapped, and labeled for sale.

Some remnants are left when tabs are cut on the asphalt roofing shingles. Lately, these remnants have been recycled for use to make asphalt for roads.
