The canvas rucksack has a very long and rich history of serving military, commercial and personal interests. While the original material was woven from hemp, the more modern versions are made from cotton and linen. The material can be treated with chemicals to provide enhancements and increase its durability.

History has shown the use of the fabric to extend as far back as the thirteenth century when it was used to strengthen shields for armies. As a bag, it continues to be used to provide troops with a carryall that can withstand harsh weather conditions without wearing out. Service members not only carry their clothes, but also use these bags for their survival gear as well.

The durability of the material comes from the simple weave that is used. A tight, strong thread is used to create the pliable but thick fabric that does not wear out the way other materials may. Where some may begin to develop holes quickly, this rucksack takes the bumps and abrasive conditions in stride. When hemp became taboo for weaving, the manufacturers applied the same conditions to cotton and linen to come up with a strong alternative.

Originally, wax was applied to the material to provide a waterproof seal. The modern methods simply use a combination of chemicals that seal it from water and protect it from fire as well. While most people do not expect to put their materials in a place where they will get wet, the bag is popular because it is so protective. They are very popular with the military and other groups of people for these reasons.

As a commercial interest, the satchels and bags use the same material. By adding padding to the cloth, they are able to protect important papers and laptops. In fact, many of the bags are still in service long after the laptops they protect are replaced due to age. They are required to protect the electronics as they are tossed into overhead bins, stepped on, and dropped repeatedly.

For personal use, they are a mainstay for any college bound student. Since they are water resistant, the student can protect their important assignments and expensive books as they rush to class in the rain, snow, or pounding sun. They can be spotted sitting in various corners of classrooms, cafeterias, libraries, and popular outdoor gathering spots.

There are not very many devices that can withstand the abuses that rucksacks endure. The overall abuse they receive would destroy just about any other type of product. In fact, the more modern vinyl backpacks used in schools often do not last more than a year before being torn or wearing a hole that renders them useless. For a similar price, students could protect their investments for years.

The tried and tested material in canvas rucksacks possibly makes them history's most durable bag. Tested by centuries of use in the military, they continue to be used and coveted by many military, business, and student multitudes. In many places you will find new and used for sale because they last for very long times and endure much abuse with a smile. They have protected many clothes, important papers, electronics, and schoolbooks over the years.
