Some of the nomenclature used for marijuana is weed, grass, reefer, Mary Jane and pot. The use of Marijuana usually starts early between the ages of 12-17 years old. Most "tweens" indulge in it mostly due to curiosity or peer pressure. Youngsters of today and yesteryears have not understood the noise and opposition against pot. Most of them take it to have fun or wind down after a tiring day.
However, in spite of its popularity, marijuana is still an illegal drug. If there are people who doubt the Federal government's stand on the drugs, it is time for them to take another reality check. The movement to legalize marijuana gained momentum when in the 90s, AIDS and cancer patients began to experience the side-effects of the treatments administered to them. Smoking marijuana alleviated the side effects such as pain, continuous nausea and vomiting. To understand the idea behind legalizing marijuana, one needs to consider both sides of the coin.
There are numerous reasons why marijuana should be made legal. The government is ultimately the voice that decides on the passing of a particular Bill or legalizing a drug. The government should have the same standards for all products. For instance, products such as tobacco and alcohol can cause more deaths than marijuana.
Another reason is the correct utilization of the tax payer's money. The government spends millions of dollars, tracking people addicted to marijuana and appropriately rehabilitating them. As an alternative, government can legalize weed and tax it appropriately.
Also, if the government is worried about the growing number of addicts, it can solve the problem by educating students through propaganda speeches or demonstrations. As most people can tell from experience, the best form of learning is exposure.
There are a few reasons why marijuana should be stopped from hitting the pharmaceuticals and other stores. People know the dangers of smoking/chewing tobacco. Weed has higher concentration of carcinogens as compared to tobacco. It also encourages people to take up smoking, something they would not have considered in other circumstances. Some disorders such as anxiety and paranoia have also been associated with smoking weed.
There are certain other issues before legalizing marijuana. It can cause lack of motivation and short term memory loss. While people may enjoy the "relaxed" and "dazed" stage, it can cause a laid back attitude towards life.
Well, every product or idea has pros and cons. However, as the pros outweigh the cons, so the best recourse is to just go for it! Enforcing a period of trial would be the best way of surveying the situation.
