You must have heard the line “sing from the diaphragm”, but don’t know the exact meaning of it. You may ask yourself, how can a diaphragm sing? What professional voice coaches meant with this line, is to use your diaphragm to control your singing breath. To perfect singing breathe, you must practice with good vocal exercise. If you have an excellent vocal exercise you can certainly perfect your singing breathe.

Singing from the diaphragm is a complex coordination of the muscle and breath that many music teachers find it difficult to deliver in words to their music students. That is the reason why there is so much confusion when it comes to this topic. Students in music classes find it difficult to execute the singing through the diaphragm because some music teachers if not most of them find it very hard to execute or explain to them the concept of singing from the diaphragm.

To give you an idea of how your diaphragm works when you are breathing, I suggest that you try this breathing exercise whenever you’re alone or with your friends. Relaxe your posture, stand up straight and take a big yawn. While taking a big yawn, notice that your stomach expands outwards. Well, that is the diaphragm at work, pushing out your stomach so that your lungs can drop lower for you to take in more air.

The diaphragm muscle is also used for the control of airflow by sending the right amount of air to your vocal cords. As you sing higher notes, less air is required for the vocal cords. By sending the right amount of air, your quality of voice will be stable and relaxed and the overall singing voice will sound much better. However, it is very important to practice with the correct vocal exercises until singing from the diaphragm is an ingrained habit so that you don’t have to think of it when you are singing because you are using the said singing technique. You don’t even need to remember how much air to release because you will be releasing just the correct amount of air naturally.

Contrary to common belief, you don’t need proper breathing exercises for singing to strengthen your diaphragm. The muscles in the diaphragm are already strong enough as it is. The reason for this is because your vocal cords are very small and delicate muscles and thus do not require too much support.

I’ll give you the steps in doing the vocal exercises breathing technique. First put your palm lightly in your stomach, then take a deep breath. As you are breathing in, extend your stomach outward and sideways as the air comes in. When you exhale, pursed your lips together to release a controlled stream of air and at the same time, with your stomach becoming smaller and back to its normal state as the air is being released. If you carefully these steps, you can now feel how it is when you sing from the diaphragm.
