If you are familiar with the concepts of computer programming then you may be able to build your own software, however even if you don't know anything about computers you could commission someone to make one for you.
In order to make money from any software you first need to decide what it is that you want it to do. It should ideally make a certain process or job much easier than it is normally. In order for it to be profitable it needs to be unique, or have some unique selling feature.
Will your software offer more advanced features? Improved support? Or will it simply be cheaper than the competition?
Once you've decided on what it is you want your software to do it's then time to build it. Now if you can build it yourself then you can save quite a lot of money. However if you can't then you will need to get someone to write it for you.
There are plenty of people working on freelance websites that will be able to help you out. Do however make sure that you get them to sign an NDA agreement before discussing any details with them, you certainly don't want them to tell your competitors about your software, or start selling it themselves!
