Darts is one of the countless games you can enjoy with your friends and family after a few rounds of beer on a relaxing day out - or even in the comfort of your own home if you own a darts board yourself. Some people tend to feel reluctant to take part in darts games due to lacking knowledge of the rules, or fearing that they'll look goofy trying to make a nice throw.

In actuality though, playing darts is really straightforward and it can be a wonderful way to mingle with those around you and spend the night in an entertaining way. As with all sports, you must begin by learning the rules; which, with darts, are quite easy - you have a board (most commonly circular), split into different sections numbered according to the points they each give. You take turns with other players (with the traditional rules dividing you in two teams of two players each) throwing darts at the board, and each hit subtracts the total you've hit from your initial score (which is either 301 or 501 in most popular variations). The first player to reach 0 points wins.

Of course, it is a little more difficult than that and there are some intricacies you must become familiar with - for example, when you've reached the point where it's a matter of just one throw to clear your score, something many beginners don't understand is that they must get a hit that sets the number to 0 precisely - not lower, not higher. What this means is that if you have a score of 19, you must hit 19, not anything higher - if you go below zero your score would be reset to what it was before the throw; this usually makes the last rounds of a darts game the most interesting, as players are each trying to get a particular number and individual skill truly starts to shine.

Getting your throw perfected will take some time, but the greatest barrier is usually in the beginning of your learning, when you have to familiarize yourself with the technique for throwing a dart in general. Take it simple and listen to any tips you're given - it's actually a very simple process which will surely come naturally to you after just a few tries, but it will take quite a lot of practice before you've perfected it.
