There are plenty of martial arts that one can learn including Brazilian jiu-jitsu. This form of martial art teaches that people have don't have to be big and strong to defend themselves. If they use the correct technique and leverage they can easily defeat a bigger and stronger person. The martial art was derived from Kodokan judo a Japanese martial art during the early period of the 20th century. This martial art form concentrates on both chokeholds and joint-locks.

This martial art can be used in mixed martial arts competitions, sport grappling tournaments (both gi and non-gi) as well as for self defense. It has helped women defend themselves against stronger opponents.

The martial art is now gaining popularity among security guards and police officers. Learning martial arts like Brazilian jiu-jitsu can improve one's chances of succeeding in hand-to-hand combat.

There are seven different belts under this martial art starting from white belt and ending in red belt.

White belt is the first belt that a practitioner of Brazilian jiu-jitsu is awarded. There are no special prerequisites for a person to be awarded this belt.

The next belt is the blue belt and for a practitioner must show that they have a well-rounded skill-set. The practitioner must be well versed both in basic offensive moves as well as power techniques. The minimum age for receiving this belt is 16 years. The minimum period needed for a person to get a blue belt is one year to one year and six months.

The next belt is the purple belt. The purple belt signifies that the prtactitioner is now a part of the adult ranking system. One has to train for a minimum period of four years dedicatedly to be awarded this belt. Those practitioners who have been awarded this belt have gained enough knowledge that they can now teach those below them. One has to be 16 years or above to get this belt. The practitioner must have spent at least two years holding a blue belt before they become eligible to get the purple belt.

After the purple belt there is the brown belt. Getting this belt means that the practitioner is one belt away from joining the elite black belt. Practitioners who have reached this level should start to refine the techniques they have learnt rather than learning new ones. The minimum age of the practitioner when they can receive this belt is 18 years. They should have spent at least one year six months as purple belt holder before they become eligible to get the brown belt.

The next belt is the black belt. The practitioner must be a holder of the brown belt for a minimum period of one year and their age should be 19 years or higher.

Practitioners who have displayed that they have attained the highest level of knowledge both in the terms of technical and practical are awarded the black and red belt. Only practitioners who have trained very hard get the red belt. Even under the red belt only the founders of this martial art hold the highest rank.
