Prototyping processes have become much popular today and there is a higher demand for it in the field of building models. The quality of the prototyping depends on the material that is used.
CNC prototyping secures its place in the field of prototyping as it differs from other kinds of prototyping. CNC prototyping makes the final model by cutting away from a solid material. Various materials are used in this type of prototyping varying in their nature. Soft materials and hard materials of different kinds are used and this is found to be a great advantage.
CNC machines work very accurately and also tolerant unlike others. It can cut materials in any angle and the cutting path can also be to a minimum of 0.1 mm. True-to- life models can be efficiently created by this prototyping strategy and they can also be coloured using paints. Electroplating too can be done if the material used is a metal. This consumes more time for the programming unlike the other prototyping process and this is found to be the only sensible disadvantage of using this type of prototyping. CNC machines undergo CAM programming which consumes time and effort, but provides high quality of prototype.
If deep 3D models produced from 3D model printers are used to prototype using CNC machines, it takes longer time to set the programme and work on it which can easily be done within few hours using a SLA machine. But this is not a great pit fall of the CNC machine when compare it to the quality it provides. CNC machines are much preferred to be used in any sort of environment as they do not invoke any great environmental pollution, such as forming dusts and other sooth particles. They are always abided to a clean process.
CNC machines can work with very minute and small structures that are difficult to be dealt by other types of prototyping. Complex models that are made in 3D model printers come out with complex cutting which needs more of severe and careful cutting. CNC is the best method to use at such instances as they do not require any great hand finish at the end. Much care and concern should be paid when dealing with CNC machines to get a high quality output. Only experts and well experienced should work on them as they cannot be easily handled by a newbie at the first shot.
