Arthritis affects more than 70 million people in the United States. Although there is no cure for arthritis, there are arthritis treatment options aimed at relieving pain and improving joint mobility.

Arthritis treatment can include drugs. Over-the-counter pain-relief medications can be taken to alleviate some of the pain associated with arthritis. Aspirin should be avoided because a higher dosage is required for the medication to take effect. Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen may also be taken. Corticosteroid injections reduce the inflammation in joints and decreases pain and swelling. These injections are not available over the counter and must be given by a doctor. The doctor may numb the skin before the injection to prevent any pain from the actual injection.

Exercise can reduce the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. With exercise, muscles become stronger and joints become more flexible. Speak with the doctor about the best exercise program for your needs. Fatigue and pain are associated with arthritis. Resting joints and muscles will provide some relief from the pain. Another part of arthritis treatment may include dieting. Having a well-balanced diet encourages a more healthy body weight. Since excess weight puts pressure on joints, some types of arthritis worsen with obesity. The proper body weight will decrease the symptoms and advancement of arthritis.

Using splints, braces, canes, or show inserts can help protect joints from the stress of everyday activities. These can also relieve the symptoms from arthritis.

Heat and cold therapies can also be a part of arthritis treatment. Heat therapy includes paraffin wax, ultrasound or moist heat. Heat therapy works to increase blood flow and flexibility in joints. Cold therapy includes cold packs and cold water soaks. It works to numb nerves and relieve inflammation in joints caused by arthritis. Treatment can also include surgery to remove or repair the damaged joint. The bones in a joint can also be fused together or the joints can be replaced with artificial ones.

Consult with a doctor about the best treatment for arthritis. The arthritis treatment your doctor suggests may be a combination of two or more of the options discussed above.
