When cleaning your home, make sure that your pet is in a safe location first. Never leave toilet cleaner in the toilet, because this is a place where your pet may drink from, and they can die from the solution. After cleaning the toilet, wipe the outside with a damp cloth to remove any left over solution, and flush the toilet at least a few times to make sure that only clear water remains.
There are many plants that are poisonous to your pets and you should carefully check with the retailer before buying plants that come into your home. The next important item is medication. Never give your pet medication that is intended for humans, even things like pain relievers are highly toxic to animals, and one 500 milligram tablet of acetaminophen can kill a cat that weighs 7 pounds. Never leave your medication in places like tables, counters or even on the sink in the bathroom, always place your meds out of reach of pets.
Never feed chocolate to your pets, this could cause pancreatic problems, speed up heart rates, and even kill your pet. This includes ice cream, and any snacks that have even small amounts of chocolate in them. On the same note, never allow your pet to consume caffeinated drinks or alcohol.
If you follow the same rules as you would with children, you can keep your pets from harm. There are many different resources to help you, both online, and from your local veterinarian. Be sure to educate yourself as much as possible as to what kinds of things may be harmful to your pets, and read all warning labels carefully before purchasing any thing you may think will be hazardous.
