Minecraft is already one of the most popular games of all time, and it's not even out of beta yet, and for experienced gamers that can mean only one thing: Hackers are sure to be found. Unfortunately, while Minecraft offers a great early multiplayer experience, hackers can run rampant on servers without a whitelist, and if you don't know how to protect your bases and chests from them, then you may be in for a world of trouble. Luckily, there are four great ways you can save yourself the heartache and keep yourself out of a hacker's eyes.
1. No Air -- One of the most popular ways to cheat in Minecraft involves using simple transparent textures, and while it may seem like there is no way to avoid being found under such circumstances, the reality is this form of cheating still requires the cheater to obey thew laws of the game. More precisely, this means that just like for you, the game is loaded for them in chunks (areas surrounded by air), and if there is no air surrounding your chest then there is no way the x-ray cheater can find it. Simply embed your chest into a wall and close it off on all sides, only removing the blocks directly above it to access it from time to time, and closing it back up. If done right, you'll be safe from all but the most dedicated of hackers.
2. Surround in Lava -- Lava is a formidable weapon of defense against casual players in Minecraft, but against hackers it can be a necessity. Most hackers who see through walls are forced to leave lava turned on to prevent themselves from digging into a fiery death, and for this reason surrounding your base in lava can make you almost invisible. Even if the hacker has their settings tweaked in such a way that they can't see lava (and thus can see your base), they will likely die at least once attempting to dig into your base due to that fact.
3. Natural Defense -- When lava isn't working and the no air rule doesn't seem to help, then consider a more natural form of chest defense. Consider for a moment that many x-ray hackers have minerals turned on, which means surrounding your chests with savvy placements of iron may be the perfect way to guarantee you won't be found. Simply keep the chest at or very near to bedrock level and use as minimal iron as you can, and any hacker would drive himself insane if he knew that behind an iron vine somewhere in the map was your chest.
4. Make it a Pain -- Sometimes, the only good defense is a painful one. If trying to stay invisible from hackers just isn't producing the kind of results that you want, then consider making it as difficult as possible to break into your base or vault. If you are lucky enough to play in a server with warps enabled (you should be), then make a very small room at bedrock level with enough room for one or two chests, and then surround the base with as many layers of bedrock as you can in every direction. It may take time to farm up all the obsidian, but if you can get a few stacks on each side, you may have earned yourself enough of a nuisance that any hacker would be crazy to attempt such a feat, especially if you keep the profile inside your base low with only one small chest for mega-important valuables.
