First of all you really want to avoid static shock when you make your way to the innards of your computer; there are a couple of ways you can do this. You can buy yourself an antistatic wrist strap, this is probably the safest option, but if you aren't feeling it, it's recommended that you work in bear feet, that way you have the lowest chance of charging yourself up, and before you start performing computer surgery always make sure you ground yourself on something metal.
First of all quite obviously you're going to want to turn your computer off and unplug it, Then it's time to make your way to the inside by taking off your computers case, in the case of a laptop you're going to take off the bottom once you're inside it's time to find the memory sockets on the motherboard, these can be identified as the sockets either holding memory like the kind you have in hand, or the sockets that look like they would hold the memory you have. Now that you've located the memory socket it's time to make an extraction if need be, if you've got yourself some slow memory you're going to want to pull the socket clasps off to the side, then you're going to gently pull the memory stick up and out of there, you're probably going to want to put this old memory and put it into a plastic bag for safe keeping.
Now for inserting the new memory, inside the desktop you're going to take your memory stick and look at the notches on the bottom, now you're going to align these notches with the dividers and clasps inside the socket, then you're going to push the memory stick right down in there. In the laptop world you're going to just push the memory in, from there two clips will hold it down flat. Now just turn your computer on and see if it worked, if not the memory sticks may just not be in firmly enough.
