Colon cleansing is an increasingly popular alternative medicine therapy. It aims to rid the colon of accumulated fecal matter and other toxins, making room for more wholesome health. It is quite an old therapy really, dating back at least a couple of centuries, though it seems to have been forgotten for some years. It was to be ‘unearthed’ a few years ago, and popularized by being made a subject of discussion in a number of popular ‘talk shows’ – eventually leading to what was and largely remains a colon cleansing fad.
Colon Cleansing and Misconceptions
As with all popular things, of course, misconceptions were bound to arise with regard to colon cleansing.
1) For one, because of its endorsement by ‘celebrities’ and other opinion leaders, many people came to view colon cleansing as an expensive therapy, the sort that the rich ‘spoil’ themselves with. The truth of the matter is that colon cleansing is in fact a therapy that virtually anybody can afford. For the most part, colon cleansing is a natural process – one in which very little intervention is needed. Modern colon cleansing is really about ‘submerging’ the accumulated fecal matter and other toxins in water, and the ‘flushing’ them out of the body. This is indeed something you can do for yourself, and all that you need is a colon cleanser, which gives your body the capacity to take in and tolerate the considerable amounts of water required for the process, while also ‘nudging’ some of the insoluble toxins to dissolve and be flushed out of the body. And the colon cleansers don’t really cost a lot of money. There are some going for as little as a few tens of dollars. So ultimately, whether or not to go for colon cleansing becomes a question of whether or not you care for your health, rather than a question of how much money you have.
2) The second widely held misconception about colon cleansing is that it is superfluous. According to the proponents of this point of view, the body has a natural ‘self cleansing’ potential, and it doesn’t need help through processes like colon cleansing. The problem with this argument is that it doesn’t take into account the fact that our bodies have not evolved proportionally to our lifestyle changes. We still have the bodies that our ancestors had –at a time when diets were fully natural, and when the question of taking in chemicals (in form of medications, food additives and so on) did not arise. So our bodies are finding themselves being presented with super refined diets they were not meant to handle. Our bodies too, are finding themselves presented with lots of chemicals we take in – medications, food preservatives, food colorings and so on; which they are not well equipped to get rid of. Hence the need for interventions like colon cleansing.
3) The third widely held misconception about colon cleansing is the one to the effect that it is harmful, or at least potentially harmful. This may have been the case with primitive forms of colon cleansing, in which (allegedly) sharp, seemingly crude tools were inserted into the body, and so on. But with modern colon cleansing, which is mainly done with the help of water to ‘flush out’ toxins from the body, colon cleansing is a very safe procedure, one that nobody needs to worry about.
