Somewhat unlike League of Legends, another popular game in the DotA or MOBA genre, Heroes of Newerth is very carry centric with the way games are won or lost by the performance of a carry player. But the carry cannot do it entirely alone, and needs support from teammates throughout the game. Here are the three main responsibilities of a support player in HoN.

1. Warding -- The absolute number one priority of a support player in HoN is to make sure the map is properly warded at all times. Warding provides a great advantage for teammates by allowing them to see critical areas of the map. When warding, make sure to ward as high as possible on the terrain to get the most vision out of the ward. Also make sure to ward a location that reveals important information such as incoming ganks or rune status. Wards are cheap, but because there is a limit on how many can be purchased in a certain time period, you don't want to waste them. Almost the entire gold income of a support player should go towards wards. A common cause of teams losing is a support player refusing to ward. More advanced strategy involved counter-warding, placing a different type of ward that only reveals invisible units, allowing you to see enemy wards and kill them.

2. Babysitting -- Babysitting is known as taking action to allow your carry to farm uncontested in a lane. This means that the support player must be aggressive and harass to keep enemy players at bay and avoid the urge to last hit creeps for gold so that the carry may get the most gold possible. Denying your own creeps is also crucial when babysitting to limit the effectiveness of the other team's carry player in your lane. But beware, the enemy support player in the lane will also be looking to do the exact same thing.

3. Jungle Stacking -- In HoN, jungle creeps respawn exactly every minute at X:00 when their spawn point is empty. Due to this mechanic, roughly 5 seconds to the minute it is possible to lure creeps outside of their spawn point, allowing new creeps to spawn there. When the creeps that were lured away run back to their spawn point, there will now be two sets of creeps there, or two stacks. Each jungle camp can have a maximum of three stacks, including the more difficult "ancients" camp. Stacking is another vital role of a support player that will help his team's carry player increase his farm tremendously.
