Geographically five countries belong to Central Europe - Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland. While any of the respective countries' capitals are overcrowded with European tourists, most arriving by bus loads from all corners of Europe, the countryside is often peacefully devoid of the hordes.
Spring and Fall can be a fantastic time in any parts of Central Europe, and somewhat less crowded and you can mix your trip with visiting some of the wonderful events taking place in the course of that time.
But as any corner of Europe, the heart of Central Europe offers the possibility to experience it by getting away from the cicties and roaming its reaches cycling or walking. In case you love to cycle what's far better than power your own two wheels and cycle this part of Europe's very best bicycle trails.
As connecting between the capitals still lures most, no fine cycling route stands out better than that between Prague and Vienna. Excellent trails to cycle that follows the Danube is the Passau to Vienna that you can extend all the way to Budapest. Crossing it you can find two wonderful alternative, the Salzburg-Prague bicycle path and the Amber trail from either Vienna or Budapest to Poland.
No matter what you decide, invest at least three days in one capital, then repeat the same when you reach your destination. For example you can fly into Prague, cycle to Vienna or do it in reverse. When cycling or walking the Vienna to Prague Greenways or the Salzburg - Prague trail, you will be passing via the romantic town of Cesky Krumov in southern Bohemia, a host to many festivals.
Similarly in southern Moravia's picturesque town of Mikulov, only a handful of hours from Vienna, you can find more than enough reasons to celebrate, not the least of which is grapes harvest, hence the cause of the Palava Wine Festival. This year the festivals is held from September 9 to 11, truly not to miss event if you time your cycling or walking vacation around this festival.
