There's a church in Colorado, after ten years of printing and distributing "tracks," a small color brochure, that decided to switch to a short-run newspaper instead. They'd deliver it exactly the same kind of way-door to door, dropping it off at businesses and gathering places and to their own parishioners. The newspaper offered more room for content, a sense of professional publishing and, far different than anything they'd done before, allowed for advertising from the local community. It was worth giving a shot.
The results were almost unbelievable.even almost too good to be true.but they were true. And it happened again in their second issue, and their third.
This little newspaper, first of all, not only paid for itself from the advertising from local merchants, but the church actually made money,, money they could and did use for programs and projects within their church that they previously were not able to do.
That in itself was an incredible accomplishment. But it wasn't the most incredible accomplishment.
The church was visited by almost twenty new people in the days that followed their publication. They had dozens of phone calls. They had people asking about the articles within the publication, articles dealing with child raising, marriage advice and what faith means for a variety of individuals lives. People called to ask counsel, to seek the therapeutic knowledge of a Pastor's training, a response to his own columns in the newspaper. The publication even helped people find loved ones that they had lost contact with for many, many years.
In one publication, this church's newspaper did more for the community and their parish than the ten years of previous publications did before.combined.
And, almost miraculously, it happened again with their second issue, and their third.
The pastor who created this newspaper didn't do this to enhance his own material life, to buy a better car or new computer.he did it to help his church, his message, his community and his family, and his name is Pastor Greg Baker, his church the Gospel Light Baptist Church in Greeley, Colorado.
Churches everywhere are now looking and following this example and re-thinking, in this day and age of needing not only much desired funds but growing and expanding their faiths and administering to their communities, the way to go about accomplishing these important goals.and embracing this important innovation of a short-run newspaper.
