It is almost needless to say that people who take the decision to join the police force rarely do so because they want to earn a fortune. There are so many other things to consider and the police force can offer a very good salary. The police pay scales are one of the advantages to look forward to if you decide your path is in the police force.
The police pay scales are based upon rank and experience. The more experience you acquire the more productive you are likely to be as an officer and thus the more money you will receive for your work. The salaries are all on a pro rota basis and overtime will of course be paid when shifts run over time.
The basic salary for an officer upon completion of training and probation is £22,680 as of September 2009. This will then rise each year for a total of ten years until the salary reaches £35,610 a year, for an officer with 10 years or more experience in the force.
If you are lucky enough to be promoted then the same kind of system is in effect with the pay of sergeants right the way up to the six figure salary of the police chiefs. This recognises both length of service and the level of commitment shown by any officer of any rank and rewards patience and loyalty.
There is generally a rise of just over 2% from year to year to account for inflation for officers of all ranks and levels of experience. The entire police pay scales shift to keep up with inflation every year and are set to do so again this year.
With this system in place, all officers have a pay increase to look forward to and a sense of achievement when they get there. Having a guaranteed pay increase each year is a very positive thing indeed and the security of knowing your finances for the next ten years is a very, very valuable thing to hold.
There are many advantages of working for the police and the salary is just one of them. The pension and retirement arrangements are also exceptionally positive and like no other employment on Earth. There is often gym access for officers, free of charge, and this is also another good reason why the police pay scales are just the tip of a very solid iceberg - it really isn't going to melt any time soon.
So there you have it, the police pay scales are a great system and allows financial predictability and certainty for the police officers that find themselves amongst its ranks. It enables reward for loyalty and commitment as well as ensuring the highest ranked officers make it to the very top. This is both fair and easily applicable. The police pay scales may look like a very long table indeed but in reality if you enjoy your job then you will soon be at the top of the scale. There are no snakes in this game either and the ladder won't be swept from under your feet.
