If you are getting started with World of Warcraft for the first time or you are looking for new and interesting things to explore in game, leveling is likely the first thing on your mind, with your professions right behind it. Some people love them, some people can't stand them, and other people just don't know what to do with them. If leveling is your priority, what place do your professions have in it? What good are they and are they something that you should bother with at all, let alone turn into a priority?
First, start by remember that professions are not necessary. While they will make certain things easier, not having them will not keep you from getting to level 80. Leveling a profession is something that definitely takes time and effort and if you are intent on getting to Northrend as quickly as possible, you will want to come back and pick up the professions later on if you want them at all!
That being said, it cannot be denied that some professions are useful. Take a look at the three secondary professions of Fishing, Cooking and First Aid. When you are on the run towards 80, you will find that it is not all that difficult to level First Aid at the same time. You get the material for First Aid from cloth drops as you go, and though it's a bit tedious to make the bandages, they can be fairly helpful as you travel. Similarly, you can always buy a great deal of cloth from the Auction House and level that way.
Another thing to keep in mind is the bonuses that you can get with some professions. For instance, Herbalism is a gathering profession and even if it seems a little dull, it can get you Lifeblood, which is a heal over time. If you are playing a cast will no ability to heal, this can be essential. On the other hand, when you take Skinning, which can also be leveled as you kill mobs, you will pick up the bonus Master of Anatomy, which gives you a better chance of landing critical hits. Consider how impressive this could make your combat ability and how well this can work for you in the long run!
When it comes right down to it, the primary professions are all ways for you to make gold. If you are saving up for a flying mount or if you happen to be a very gear dependent class, it can make a difference, but if you are only interested in leveling, you might not want to bother. Take some time and look into how you are playing and what you want to do. First Aid can help you devote less time to eating and drinking and it can also help during fights, but beyond that, the other professions can be safely passed up!
