You can spend one day trying wakeboarding and water skiing even if you're not a specialist so long as you have tutors to guide you. The two sports need to have a tow boat, cables and a lot of balancing by you. Fortunately, there are lots of vacation resorts that include classes so that you can learn in less than a day. You'll notice that many newbies that learn how to wake board or water ski in half a day.

What is Water skiing?

As the name indicates, you'll hop onto a set of skis and ski across the water in them. The equipment needed is slightly different from the gear you use to ski in snow. A cable will be attached to the boat and then you will be riding in the wake of the boat.

Maybe you've seen people water skiing on one ski instead of a pair. This is an advanced technique. Some water ski enthusiasts move on to win medals in competitions.

Wake Boarding

Wakeboarding is a fairly new sport compared to skiing, water skiing and surfing. Wakeboarding was discovered when surfers attempted to use a surf board to water ski. Word quickly spread and soon, people were ordering their own wake boards. The idea is to "surf" in the wake of a special tow boat.

A small rectangular board is usually used for wakeboarding. It looks more like a skateboard. The bottom is not flat but rounded in order to skim the surface of the water more effectively. Fins may also be attached under the board.

Safety Equipment

You will need to wear a helmet and pads for knees and elbows when you go wakeboarding or skiing on water. If you hit the water at top speed, you may feel like you hit cement. A suit that can cover your legs and arms is also needed.

A 3rd party should be present in the boat. A spotter can be an observer. His job is to tell the driver to slow down or speed up. A slower speed may be needed for beginners. The spotter can be the one who signals the rider if there is a problem and the boat needs to slow down.
