There is more to baby skin care than most parents realize. Proper care of infant skin involves keeping the whole baby clean. It can take a newborn baby's skin a few months to adjust to life in the outside world which is why a newborn baby is more prone to skin conditions. Practicing proper baby skin care means making smart choices throughout the day. Anything from your baby's clothing to the soap that is used in his (or her) bath has the potential to affect his (or her) skin. Don't worry too much though because practicing good skin care for your baby does not have to be difficult or complex. It can be very easy if you know how to use your common sense. Here are some tips to help you out as you get used to the new routine.

Don't forget to dab some sunscreen on your baby's face and ears when you take him outside. Give your baby some extra protection by applying some zinc oxide to his face and ears when you take him outdoors. Remember: whenever you take your baby outside into a sunny day, he or she needs to wear a hat! There isn't any such thing as being too cautious!

Use a gentler detergent on your baby's clothing than you would use on your own. The detergent you use on your own clothing is usually too harsh and irritating to use on a baby's clothing. Regular laundry soaps can leave behind a residue and make your baby's clothes rough and irritating. Using a gentle detergent will keep baby's clothing from getting rough and will rinse off of the clothing easier so you won't have to worry about any residue causing problems on your baby's skin.

You don't need to use very much soap at all to keep your baby's skin clean. You can thoroughly clean your baby with just a few drops of soap. Using more than that will dry out the baby's skin and make it vulnerable to infections and other skin problems. Never directly apply soap to your baby's skin. Put the soap drops onto a washcloth and work up a lather; use the lather to clean your baby (make sure to rinse him quickly). It will be easier for you, especially during the first few months of your baby's life, to clean one part of your baby completely at a time. Handling a soapy baby can be very scary!

There are many different ways to care for your newborn's skin. You will be glad to learn that taking care of your infant's skin does not have to be very hard at all. Your baby will have clean, clear and healthy skin as long as you take the time to shop carefully and use your common sense when anomalies pop up. Remember that you need to take care of all of your baby's skin not only the skin on her face and head. Keeping your daughter or son's skin clean and healthy is an all day long type of process but don't worry too much about it. Before you know it, you'll be taking care of your baby's skin without even thinking about it much at all! It won't take long for it to become second nature. It will be an automatic response!
