Setting up a successful home based business is not for the faint hearted. There are many factors that go into such a feat, all of which need to be seriously addressed and considered in full before embarking on any new venture. One of the most important is the issue of now living where you work, and working where you live. This crossover can be a pleasurable move that also leads to a lot less stress as well as some more leisure time. However the change needs to be studied carefully before commencing – otherwise it could end up leading to as much if not more stress than that which you are trying to escape from.
There are various elements caused by working from home that need to be considered. For one thing, there is the issue of space. How much room are you going to need for your home based business? Do you have that room? If you can make that room, is it going to intrude on the family’s space and thus cause tension and resentment? This can be a particular problem if the business you wish to develop involves personal interaction with customers, with people related to the business coming to the house.
This mix of business and personal space could be a major problem if not thought out properly beforehand. Ideally, family space and business space need to be two very different zones. If that is not possible, then time limits need to be addressed, to ensure that one does not clash with the other, which neatly leads us into another issue that businesses based at home face, one that revolves around personal and family time schedules.
This can be a complex issue and really needs looking at before jumping into starting a business from home. Are you alone, or do you have a partner? Do you have children who may need taking and picking up from school? Their needs and time schedules need to be considered before setting the time schedule for the business.
The other question regarding partners and families is how they are going to respond to the potential level of risk involved in setting up new business, for none is without some level of risk. So how are those close to you going to feel about that? Depending on the level of risk to your financial security, this is something all family members need to be involved in and feel comfortable with before you go ahead.
Another issue, again depending on the kind of home based business you have in mind, is the question of how and if this business will affect other people in the neighbourhood in which you live. If the business by necessity involves lots of people coming and going from your home at all hours, how are your neighbours going to react to this behaviour?
A home business can be a wonderful opportunity and a chance for a whole new lease on life – but all angles need to be covered to ensure that both the business and your normal home life are not put at risk by the sudden convergence of the two.
