Many people ask themselves what the best roofing material is for them to use on their home. Even as it actually depends on the homeowner, there are many considerations that should be taken into account when choosing among the different roofing materials available in today's market. These considerations include average weather conditions, the slope of the roof, the durability of the material, and as always, the price. Experienced roofers will advice against wood shake shingles, as well as paint on roofing because they are not durable.
Put the slope into consideration at all times. The slope is an important factor in determining the type of material to be used. A lot of materials work perfectly on steep roofs, but do not work so well on flat surface because they lick easily. On the other hand, those materials that work properly with flat roofs tend not to work well with steep roofs due to their liability to wear very fast. Almost all roofers suggest sheet metal for steep roofs, especially in areas that endure much precipitation; this type of material allows for any precipitation to easily slide off. If it is a flat roof, a good roofer will recommend a material called tar which has a surface coated with something like gravel, due to the fact that these types are liable to last longer and are repairable when damaged. This type of roofing material is not suggested for steep roofs, especially those in hot weather because the tar can easily melt and slide off. In case of a medium sloped roof, ceramics and asphalt shingle roofing materials are recommended. Ceramics and asphalt shingles roofing materials sit tightly and shed water.
For durability, tar roofs may not be the most durable but they do last for a long time, and when damage occurs to them, patching can easily be applied; this allows for the total replacement of a tar roof to occur very rarely. The materials that last for the longest period of time are metal roofing materials but that is when they are punctured by a tree or any other heavy material. It is not recommended to work on or repair metal roofing materials because it decreases it durability and longevity. Asphalt shingles also last long, they log for at least 20 to 30 years if managed properly.
Speaking of price, asphalt shingles are affordable, and they also last long and are can be easily repaired when damaged. But, tar and sheet metal roofs are highly in price but they last the longest if taken care of properly.
