You may know it today as EVA, but when EVA was originally started, their name was Evergreen Airways. The name EVA comes from the first two letters of Evergreen, and the A from Airways. The change of name was necessary, because the same first name was being used by a different flight company. EVA flies out of the island country of Taiwan and provides services to Asian and international destinations. When you understand the history of EVA Airways, you will understand that they are no different from any other airline. Like many other airlines, the early 2000s were difficult financially, but they are again making money.
EVA had a tiring year in 2010, according to many aspects. They were able to make their routes longer, make changes to management and also put in bids for additional partnerships. With a new service route directly to Toronto, the company created a higher number or inroads for destinations in Canada. Farther along in the year, they launched a connecting flight from Taipei to Tokyo. By and large, the year showed an increase in annual profits which proved the company was powerful. In the intermediate, there will be anticipation of new growth wherewithal. The rationale for this is that EVA has put in their application with the Star Alliance of associated airlines. Once that is approved, then there will be even more good things happening with EVA.
Adding 22 international destinations to their everyday flights allowed EVA to invest in long-distance airplanes that were capable of making the journey. The popularity of this airline grew to over 3 million flights a year. They have a great safety record which is one of the primary motivations for people to fly with this company. This allowed the airline to actively compete for business with other airlines that they were up against. Once they were able to secure enough certifications to go into other regions, they began to grow even faster.
Much distress occurs in the airline business with rising fuel costs, and this happened to EVA in 2007. Every airline is affected by higher fuel costs, and some even go out of business, but EVA survived despite heavy losses. Even in 2008, the fuel prices continued to rise, so the profit losses also continued. The airline industry is a special type of business because it is so depending on lower fuel costs to continue to operate. In the airline business, if you can't find cheaper fuel, then you must use less of it, and that is what they did by cutting back on the number of flights. All airlines are controlled by the economy of the whole world, and EVA Air did a good job staying afloat. For a business that started in 1989, they have an interesting history. They are still progressing in their design of capturing the domestic air travel within Taiwan. Passenger jets are needed for long haul international travel, and EVA has placed orders for expansion. The later years during the 2000s have seen a return to profitable fiscal quarters including receiving honors for service. As a non-public, international airline, what EVA has been able to do is very remarkable. Think about how much tougher it was for a private company without public backing.
