There are some things worth paying for. Teaching my daughter to drive was something I had always looked forward to. I myself had learned to drive from my mother who always seemed to be calm and composed whenever I would grab the wheel It was also during these driving lessons that I got to be closer to mom and she would tell us her stories of learning to drive and having to "steal" the car from my grandparents when they were asleep. She told us of one summer vacation when they took the "jeep" which was an army GP vehicle they had bought for the farm and with around ten friends drove over to the beach. Her younger brother who was 9 years old then begged my mom to bring him along. On the way back, they hit a small ditch near the beach which resulted in a small bruise in my uncle's knee. Upon arriving at the house, my grandmother innocently asked what happened in reference to the beach, to which my uncle started bawling and told on my mom about the accident. This story has been told by mom and uncle several times with different versions of course.

After so many practice sessions with my daughter, it was time for the real road test. The first thing we did was to go over the procedures on how to back up the car from the garage. I told her that I would drive it first and show her what to do. I explained all the procedures to her all the time preparing to back up. With a smile, I slowly pressed on the gas pedal. Thud. I had forgotten to press the remote to open the garage door. We looked at each other and then she lightly giggled and half smiled. I go out of the car, looked at the damage. The rest of the family had been out of town. Going online and quickly looking at my options I found out the garage door cost. I could have one done in vinyl which would set me back around $1500 dollars, or do the steel garage door which cost between 800 to 1200 dollars. I could go green and spend around 1000 to 1300 dollars or I could buy the original carriage garage door which would set me back around 2500 dollars.

I went green and now I have a memory which I would rather not share with others but knowing my daughter, it's going to be a talk piece soon enough. That is the cost of my garage door.
