Origami derives from the Japanese words "ori" which means folding and "kami" which means paper. Therefore, origami means a traditional Japanese art of paper folding. It started on the 17th century AD and was popularized across the world during mid-1900s. It was considered as a modern art form ever since then. Its main goal is to transform a plane paper into a beautiful through the use of folding and sculpting techniques only.
Origami star or shiruken is one of the most popular things that you can do to your paper. It is easy as long as you have all the materials that you need. Listed below are the instructions on how to make origami star.
The first thing to do is to get a rectangular plane paper. You can use a loose leaf or construction paper. Make the rectangular paper into square piece. But if you are using a square piece of paper, you may proceed to the next step.
The next thing that you need to do is to fold the paper into diagonal. In order to do this, fold the top right hand corner diagonally down so that the top of the paper lines up with the left side. Doing this will form a point at the top right corner.
Next is to cut or tear the edge carefully. Cutting or tearing the edge will leave you to a square of paper. After you cut the edges, fold the paper in half then cut it into two equal parts.
Fold each piece vertically in half, parallel to the long sides. Then fold the edge diagonally so that the edges line up. Repeat the procedure until you fold all the edges of each strip. Make sure that the folds are well oriented.
Fold the edge again into diagonal. There should have three triangles; one big triangle facing you and two small triangles facing away from you. Do this step again and again until all the edges of each strip have been folded.
Turn over the left piece and then arrange the two parts by putting the right piece on top of the left piece. It should have a square in the center of each piece that lines up. However, if you can't find it, just line up the middles.
Fold the uppermost point inwards on the diagonal then insert it in the pocket. Do the same procedure at the bottom point but this time, do it upwards.
Flip it over and fold the right point on the diagonal like the previous procedure then tuck it again into the pocket. Do the same procedure with the left and final point but you may have to coax a little in order to tuck in. Add some tape in the middle to secure all the points inside it. You can now enjoy your origami star.
As you can see, it is easy to make shiruken. You can make several origami stars as many as you like. Making origami star can also be a great bonding time with your child if he/she is into type of art.
