If you are planning to market or sell a product or service online, you will probably need a website. There are a few ways by which this can be achieved.

1. Build it yourself.

If you have knowledge of HTML (hyper text mark up language) which is the text code used to construct web pages, then what are you waiting for? Get on with it! There is a great wealth of HTML information available on the internet or you can take a course online or at a local college. I am a great believer in doing things myself whenever possible or at least while your business is in the early stages of development, but this however is not for everyone and of course there is a time factor involved. Building websites this way can be very time consuming depending on size, structure and content

2. Hire a web designer to build a website for you.

Although this may well be the simplest solution and will give you exactly what you need just the way you like it, unless you happen to have a great friend who s skills include masterful web designing , this is likely to be your most costly option. If you are just starting out and you have limited funds, this expenditure could probably be better used elsewhere. If you do wish to have your website built for you, there are many web designers out there who will offer you the world. Beware .Before consulting with them, make a list of the functions you require and any particular appearance features you want to have. It may be useful to visit any existing websites that you like, try to understand what it is you like about them, is it their appearance, color scheme, catchy slogan or mission statement, ease of navigation and functionality?.. Your aim is not to copy someone s site but just to get some inspiration for your own design or even to confirm how you don t want your site to be. Always ask to see the designers work and if possible a site that has some of the kind of features you require. Confirm whether their fee is all inclusive for the complete website or whether there are costs for particular features and support after the website is completed.

3. WYSIWYG editors. (The Novice s Redemption)

No it s not a spelling error. WYSIWYG is an acronym for What you See is What you Get. These webpage editors enable you to build pages visually using tools that allow you to position objects, colours, links, information etc on your site without using any technical language or raw code implementation. Used in conjunction with templates (pre defined webpage layouts) this is an easy way for amateurs to build professional looking websites. Many web hosts offer WYSIWYG website packages with your hosting subscription which give you very simple step by step guidance to build your site and fill it with your content using a setup wizard. Of course as always, there are pros and cons to the various options, and the main con to using templates is that they are rigid forms and so there is a limit to the amount of individualism you can express with them. But don t let that put you off as there are many styles and variations available so you are sure to find something suitable to get you going.

There are many WYSIWYG editors around some of the most popular brands are Macromedia Dreamweaver, Sitemaker, Adobe GoLive, Microsoft Frontpage and Xcite pro.

Whatever you decide to do just make sure the end product is a desirable place for your potential customers to visit, because if they like it they will hang around that much longer.
