In the good old days, a bin was a bin and you could put anything in there you wished to get rid of. Nowadays, you have to think twice about what you actually want to throw away! Yes, ok, its helping us all environmentally, but I just find it funny that now, when I just want to put something in the bin, I have to work out which bin it goes in. Some items still catch me out, like a juice carton? Is that normal rubbish or recyclable?

About two weeks ago a little food waste bin was at the end of my garden. A little bin saying Food Waste on the front. All food waste, raw or cooked must now go in this bin and kept separate. This is an extra pain as the bin is so small, it will probably take a box of Corn Flakes to fill!

Luckily for us now, there are a few bins on the market which do help us to keep different items separate as well as looking nice in the kitchen. The Brabanti and Simplehuman ranges of bins now include, for example, a 40 litre bin which is divided into two 20 litre sections. These help to keep things separate and all in the same place and looks good too.

The Brabanti and Sipmlehuman bins will suit any modern kitchen's and there are so many colours to choose from. They both also use their own brand of bin liners which help when shopping for bin bags as they are colour or letter coded. The Brabanti range comes in over 200 colours, so if your looking for a blue bin, there is about 20 different shades for you to choose from that will match the colour of your kitchen.

These bins come with different opening mechanisms to help you use the bin in a easier and mess free way. The pedal bin option of course has been around for years and lets you operate the bin with your foot so you don't need to ever touch the bin lid with your hands.

The soft touch bins, let you open the bin with a light press on the lid which will then pop up smoothly. The opening width on these bins is also big enough to empty the dust pan into without spilling.

The last bin mechanism is a bit clever. There is now a "Sensor Bin" on the market which will detect a hand coming towards the bin and will pop the lid for you! As well as being a stoke of genius, they are convenient and hygienic.

All these modern bins will help make your life just that little bit easier. These bins also come colour coded to help you pick up exactly the right size of bin liners next time your shopping that will fit nicely into your bin with no hang over.
