When connecting to a TV it's highly recommended that you use an HDMI cable and attach to a high definition TV, older TVs just really don't work that well. If you're trying to hook up to a TV using a VGA cable (these are the connectors with sort of a rectangular shape except for the fact that they kind of slant on the sides) odd are you're not going to have any luck. Many HDTVs come with DVI and HDMI ports though, so if your computer has either of these connecting to the TV is going to be a pretty simple process.
First of all you're going to have to move your TV and your computer pretty close to each other; most cables are less than six feet. All in all HDTVs are really just big monitors, so as long as you have the correct cable going from your computer to your HDTV then this should be a simple process. Once the TV and the Computer are connected you're going to want to right click the desktop, choose screen resolution, and slide the slider until you're happy with how everything looks. The only way you'll hear sound out of your TV is if you connected the two using an HDMI cable, a DVI cable will only transfer picture.
