Montreal is considered as the second largest city of the country. The name of the city is derived from a hill which is triple peaked named as Mont Royal and is located right in the heart of Montreal. The island on which Montreal is situated was also use to be called as the name of the hill. According to the 2006 census statistics Montreal was home to approximately 1,620,693 people. The figure makes Montreal the sixth largest city overall in the whole of Canada and United States of America. The metropolitan area which is commonly known as Greater Montreal had about 3,635,571 residents in 2006. Commonly spoken language of the city is French and according to some surveys Montreal is regarded as the second largest French speaking city of the world and is just behind Paris.

According to 2005 statistics Montreal’s GDP was approximately 120 billion dollars. The growth rate of the city is rapidly fast hence increasing the GDP of the city on a daily basis. The city was also home to Montreal Stock Exchange. Montreal’s major sources of revenue include the fields of commerce, technology, culture, and finance. The city is also home to headquarters of some of the biggest multinational companies which include IBM, and Air Canada.
Ice Hockey is the most popular sport of the city. There are a number of ice hockey arenas located in Montreal which daily host ice hockey events. The city itself is represented by the “Montreal Canadiens” which competes in the National Hockey League (NHL). Other than Ice Hockey the other major sport of the city are believed to be basketball and baseball.
