Anthurium flowers are given its name using a combination of two Greek terms, "anthos" and "oura". "Anthos" translates as flower and "oura" means tail. It could easily be translated as the flower on a tail. The flowers usually are not easily seen without a magnifying glass. The element of the flower that is commonly called the flower is truly a spathe. This part of the plant looks like a cross between a leaf and a petal.

In most cases, these plants are a bright red color. However, some varieties are white, pink, orange, green or peach in color. We like to call the colorful part of the plant the flower, but actually it is a spathe. This spathe consequently surrounds an inflorescence, which is referred to scientifically as a spadix, or a stalk. Which is where the actual flowers are contained. Nevertheless, even under the magnifying glass they look a lot more like a group of little bumps. When they begin the blossoming process, they will start to look really like fuzzy little bumps on the spadix portion of the plant.

The Anthurium flowers are a tropical flower. There are several different types of these flowers. One variety is very large and grows very bright and showy. They may be so large that the spathe is almost a foot wide plus the flower stalks more than a foot long. But on the opposite end of the spectrum is the plant that's only about 5 or 6 inches tall. These have a spathe that's only about an inch wide.

Anthurium flowers may stand upright as they grow, or be a lot more like a bush. Some can bear single leaves that grow basically at the tip of the stalk. One variety is the trailing plant. These can be a beautiful plant when placed into a hanging basket. Also the flowers will bloom for an extremely long time. The cut plants can stay in good health for around 5-6 weeks, as long as it is in a vase with plenty of water.

Although it is tropical and can't be grown outside in most of the states in North America, it could be grown inside as a house plant. It does wonderfully outdoors in more tropical areas such as Hawaii, South America and the Caribbean. Anthurium flowers don't require a lot of maintenance and are relatively easy to grow. They do need to be watered regularly.
