Have you ever listened to the songs by IL Devo? Such a nice blend of music, a perfect example of a musical expression of a harmonic piece, this is the best example on how to harmonize. The music that is created by choir, trio’s and quartet’s are also best examples of creating harmony.

The capability of a person to learn to sing harmony can be a very challenging and difficult discipline to master. Though there are some who were given the talent and the gift of creating distinct harmony which help define them as a singer or a band. Simply singing the melody or the tune of a song and familiarizing the distinct rhythm of a song is not difficult compared with being able to blend your voice with others to produce a distinct yet beautiful music. Simple techniques are now revealed to improve your performance to attain the nice blend of music and in order to beat the challenge of learning to sing harmony the quickest possible way.

Learning to sing harmony will take a lot of practice. The first step is to basically determine the vocal or your singing part, which is either the highest or the lowest register of singing voice. It is not easy to determine the vocal part that best suits you. For male, you can choose either your voice is Tenor (the Upper vocal register) or Bass (the Lower vocal register). While women will sing either Soprano (the Upper vocal register) or Alto (the Lower vocal register). You can also use singing scale or performing a few vocal exercises in order to determine which vocal part suits you the best. The choir director of a church or school choir can also help you determine your type of vocal register.

Harmony serves a lot of functions; one of its known functions is supporting the melody of the song or defining the distinctness of a particular song. The performance of IL Devo is exceptional and stunning where you can appreciate very much how their voices blend when one member of the quartet sings melody while the three are singing harmony, the result was an amazing perfect and richer blend of four voices that does not overlap with other voices but instead harmonized with it.

To get started, try to sing harmony by playing individual notes on a keyboard or piano. Make use of the four singing register vocals, the tenor, bass, soprano and alto because they play an important role to create a new harmony. As part of the quartet, use the four notes and synchronize with them. One member should be responsible for one type of vocal register or note and when these notes blend together, you have now produce a harmony. It is actually fun and easy to learn how to sing harmony quickly, though it will take time and practice to master it. Everyone can actually practice harmony but there is not one that sounds like the IL Devo. But this does not mean we ain’t capable of producing harmony apart from what the IL Devo did.
