Designing the perfect website is not just about knowing what the look and feel of your site should be; it's more about giving your visitors the perfect experience in every possible way. Sometimes people can be forgiving, and if your site content is just incredible, then an ugly site can get by. Given below are a three common web design mistakes that you should avoid at all costs.
There's something with flash that makes a website look good, but sadly it does the opposite to the user experience. These days you will still see it used, but it is used by very few sites and in limited amounts. There are many people who will just leave a site if it is heavily loaded with flash. Of course, there are valid applications for flash, but you have to optimize properly and make sure it does not adversely impact browser load times, etc. If you really do want to use flash and have no other choice, then make sure you have a static HTML page alternative too, so that the visitors who want to avoid flash can do so.
If you really want to be terribly old-fashioned, then go ahead and play music on your site. Music is so passe, and people just do not like it - and we are among them, too. Still though, if you elect to have some kind of music, then do not set it play automatically. The audio could be a guided tour or something that is helpful to the visitor, but still playing it automatically upon arrival is not a good idea. The worst is to make your little intro speech start playing on its own, or to remove the control functions. So audio is just one more thing you have to think about, and it falls more under usability but is still very important.
A high bounce rate can be caused by many things, and a site that has too much crammed into it could be the culprit. This is an universal principle - almost, but it really depends on who your audience is and the reasons why it is so cluttered. This is a highly subjective area that we cannot provide specific examples about, though. You can almost always find a way to make something work, however there really is only so much you can place on a site. How important something is will need to be called by you, and so that is why we feel testing is so important. All users want a pleasant and enjoyable experience, and that is the clear case for making your site clean and organized.
If you are just starting out, then always continue learning as much as possible about design mistakes and usability concerns.
