I really like the sound of an acoustic guitar. I have been fingerpicking for numerous years. One of the best discoveries Ive made is varied tunings.
If you do not know about alternate tunings you are in for a real reward. Standard tuning is certainly not the best sound for an acoustic guitar. A number of alternate tunings are
open tunings, that is the strings are tuned to an open chord. One of the best merits of this is that your guitar sounds tremendously full. Also, you can play melody runs
and have drone strings playing chords at the same time. This just isnt possible with standard tuning.
The only problem with alternate tunings i, you have to tune into these alternates. Some of the alternates call for quite a bit of retuning which is tiring and tiring on your strings
as well. Recently however, there is excellent news. There are many specialized capos that enable you to get alternate tunings in an instant, without retuning your instrument and placing stress
on your strings.
One of my beloved capos for this purpose is the Kaiser Shortcut. Kaiser is in all probability the leader in the manufacturing of guitar capos. They are strong, grab on in a moment, and keep the notes well. The Shortcut
is no exception to this rule. This capo however only presses down on three string, to be placed mainly on the fourth fret. This is not a true open tuning, but it is an enchanting tuning for certain. With just one or two fingers on the fretboard, you can crank out beautiful full chords. The really impressive thing is that it is very close to standard tuning so much so that majority of of the chords you know sound great in this tuning. You can even play barre chords all the way up the neck as usual. But its the chords that are distinctive that really make this sound remarkable. A regular eminor chord takes on a whole new color. Also because it is close to an open tuning, you can play lines and chords at the same time. The capo also enables you to play some notes, below the capo. The big benefit of these capos is that with just a squeeze the capo is off and you are back to standard tuning. Without the strain of retuning.
Another excellent capo is called the spider capo. This capo has tiny cams that you can position up or down. When the cam is down, it holds the fret. When it is up, the string remains open. In this style, you
can place these mechanical fingers exactly where you like. There are literally thousands of alternate tunings with this one capo.
If you would like to hear some alternate tunings in action, just search for Antoine Dufour on Youtube.
Another excellent thing these days if you are attempting to learn to play the guitar, is online or software based tutors. These low-cost programs can teach you to play the guitar from the begining, or teach an experienced
person new tricks. These programs specialize in teaching you the guitar fast. Its amazing what you can learn in such a short time. Since you can learn on your own time, if you have some free time, you can always throw in a new lesson. These systems typically include video closeups and other technology to make the learning effective and fun. If you are a guitar newbie, be sure to check out these applications and tuning capos.
