The live action series Dororo was recently released on DVD and is based on the hit manga series from the 1960s by Osamu Tezuka. It was a massive success at the Japanese box office and the new DVD release has a lot of special features as well as an extra featurette "Road to Dororo".

The movie is directed by Akihiko Shiota and due to the large number of action scenes the crew also includes Siu-Tung Ching who was responsible for the choreography in films such as House of Flying Daggers and Hero. You can expect an action packed ride right from the outset in this movie. When the movie was released in Japan, it spent an unprecedented six weeks at the top of the movie charts, and quite clearly was a huge success. The story follows Daigo Kagemitsu as he makes a deal with a group of demons to sell them parts of his unborn son in exchange for the power to rule the world. When his son is finally brought into this world, it's deformed and Daigo is tempted to kill the child. However, he listens to his wife reason and they decide to place the baby in a floating basket and set it off down the river.
This film is certainly going to be a hit with manga fans all over the world and in Japan it's spent an amazing six consecutive weeks at the top of the box office charts. The story is an action tale with a bit of comedy thrown in here and there and it's a mix of everything really from action to comedy. Starting early in the story, you learn that Daigo Kagemitsu makes a deal with a group of 48 demons to sell the body parts of his unborn child in exchange for the power to rule the world. When the child is eventually born, it turns out the deal was for real and the deformed child is almost killed by Daigo for being inadequate. Fortunately, his wife persuades him to let the child live and they set the boy in a basket to float down the river.
The story then introduces a young thief by the name of Dororo, who is a girl that has been raised as a boy in order to be stronger in a troubled and uncaring world. The story lets on that Dororo has a quest of her own and joins Hyakkimaru on an adventure that could prove extremely dangerous.
The DVD is rated certificate 15 and was released on the 7th of September 2009 by MVM. You should be able to pick the DVD up for about 15.99 at the moment and this will include the special features such as a trailer gallery, deleted scenes and "Road to Dororo" featurette.
