Anyone with a new baby knows how precious and lovely your little bundle of joy is. But for at least the first few months they just sleep whenever and wherever they want. This means that you, as new parents can get incredibly little sleep – probably when you need it most. It is still possible to get some sleep if you think things through and plan ahead. Here are five important tips to help you get some sleep through the day and let you enjoy life with your new baby as you should.

Go to sleep when your baby sleeps! In the first few weeks of your baby’s life, she will need constant care and attention. In the first few days she will need to be fed every few hours. This means that you get a few minutes of fragmented sleep every few hours. Yet during the day, she might be taking a few hours to nap. Try to have a nap when your baby sleeps. You will hear her when she wakes up and you will really benefit from the time you get. Try to forget all the other jobs which need doing, your sleep is more important!

When your baby does wake up in the middle of the night, make sure that you and your partner share the job of getting up to feed her. That way at least one of you will get a good night’s sleep every other day. If only one of you does it every night, then there will be serious and growing resentment between you.

Let your baby sleep in her own room from quite early on. Put a baby monitor in there with her if you need to hear her. This way she will get used to sleeping on her own right from day one.

Make sure that your baby does not go to sleep hungry. This can cause difficulties in getting her to go to sleep, and at night she will wake up hungry. If you feed her just before you go to sleep, then she may well just sleep through the night. At least this way you may be able to get 5 or 6 hours of straight sleep.

If people offer to help, take them up on it! Even if you think they are just being polite, if friends or relatives offer to help look after the baby for a couple of hours so you can sleep, let them do it!

You need to sleep not just for your own sanity, but also for the safety of the baby. In the first few months looking after a new little baby can be just on the line between bearable and unbearable. You must look after yourself too so that you can be the best parent for your new family.
