Rapid prototyping is a method utilized to upgrade a physical structure of a product via a computer -assisted design software. It makes a solid structured figure of a product instead of creating a two-dimensional layout. These prototypes are being used in different ways such as for visual representation of the product for a marketing presentation, could also be utilized for diagnostic and testing functions, and for rapid manufacturing as well. There are various technologies of rapid prototyping and one of them is the Fused Deposition Modeling method.
FDM rapid prototyping is one of the most favored technologies to make a prototype of a plastic part. It is developed by a company called Stratasys. It is a process of layered manufacturing which dismisses a thin drop of plastic one layer at a time. It is also considered to be a solid based type of rapid prototyping which is one of the reasons why it is the second most exploited rapid prototyping technology.
One of the most unbelievable things about this type of rapid prototyping is the truthful fact that it could function to create finished parts. This specific type of rapid prototyping is also proven to be a simple and quick process. Although Stereolithography remains the top choice of technology when it comes to rapid prototyping, the FDM method provides a wider range and stronger substances. It is also considered to be most ideal for conceptual models, engineering models, and functional testing prototypes.
Some of the disadvantages of this type rapid prototyping are that the parts usually have a longer time table to be done and the layering is very easy to spot due to the extrusion process. However, these finished parts are extremely durable as these parts could be made by utilizing waxes and other few engineering plastics.
Other advantages of this rapid prototyping method are it has no post curing, it uses a variety of materials, it presents an easy material changeover, and it is also office environment friendly. Aside from being office friendly, it is also waterproof and paintable which gives people freedom to choose any color for their FDM model. This type of rapid prototyping is truly one of the best choices a proven by people who have utilized it. To make a prototype of a plastic part in the quickest way possible could be achieved with FDM rapid prototyping.
