With its sandy beaches, clear waters and beautiful sunshine, Cuba is not so very different from what many people envisage paradise to look like. But with so much to explore, it’s important to make the most of your Cuba holiday. Don’t just stay in Havana but make your way out to the surrounding islands and explore the other resorts to be found in the Cuban archipelago.
Cayo Coco
Cayo Coco is located on one of the largest coral reefs in the world. No Cuba holiday is complete without a stay on this relaxed and peaceful resort which charms its visitors with its beauty. More than just a beach resort, Cayo Coco is bursting with exciting and adventurous activities. Take a cruise on a catamaran for the day and enjoy the chance to snorkel and explore hidden beaches and coves to your heart’s content. If you’re an animal lover, take a horseback ride along the beach at dusk and watch the sun set over the ocean. Lastly, while in Cuba, why not pay a visit to the sugar mill and the cigar factory and pick up some local souvenirs?
Cayo Guillermo
Slightly further north of the archipelago is Cayo Guillermo. Less developed and offering much more privacy and seclusion, this island is a haven of tranquillity. Make the most of the less crowded beaches, particularly Playa Pilar which is featured in Ernest Hemingway’s ‘Islands in the Stream’. Take a boat over to Half Moon Island for some of the best snorkelling that a Cuba Holiday can offer, but before you go anywhere, be sure to pre order your lobster from Beach Hut Restaurant. Enjoy activities such as banana boating, happy in the knowledge that your dinner will be waiting for you as you come off the beach.
Cayo Santa Maria
Cuba’s newest resort area, Cayo Santa Maria, has been declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO and is relatively untouched. With striking vegetation and spotless beaches all around, you will feel you’ve arrived in paradise the minute you set foot on this part of Cuba’s archipelago. The main beach, Playa Perla Blanca, is completely undeveloped with no food or drink stalls, sun loungers or parasols – just sand as far as the eye can see. Once you start to relax, you may decide you fancy dropping into one of the resort hotels for a luxury spa session – the perfect treat on your Cuba holiday, helping you to totally unwind.
Cayo Largo
One of the larger Cayos in the Cuban archipelago, Cayo Largo, stretches along 27 kilometres of white sand. There are two main beaches; Playa Paraiso and Playa Sirena. Make your way to Playa Paraiso for peace and quiet or if you fancy a drink and a meal, Playa Sirena has a bar and restaurant. From the marina, you can take a 20 minute boat trip to a rocky outcrop and can observe iguanas up close. Also nearby to La Marina, you will find a sea turtle farm. Run by a volunteer who helps the turtles to survive in Cayo Largo, particularly in egg deposition season, the farm is home to turtles that are recuperating before being released back into the wild. This may well be the closest you get to these wonderful creatures on your Cuba holiday, so the sea turtle farm is well worth a visit.
For many, an ideal holiday in Cuba is one spent relaxing on the vast white sands and enjoying the crystal clear seas. But one beach is not necessarily the same as any other. Each part of the Cuban archipelago boasts another barely discovered beach where you can find yourself completely alone and free to relax in peace and tranquillity. But as all of these beaches have their own beauty and charm be sure to make the most of your Cuba holiday by visiting as many as possible.
