Replacing an exterior window can often be a difficult process, and you should usually call a window installation company to come do the job for you. The price of replacing one of these exterior windows is usually fairly economical, and they will ensure that the job gets done well.

Rather than having to deal with all of the problems that arise when you try to do a DIY project, hiring a window installation company to make the simple repair will save you a lot of time and headache. The contractors will ensure that the job is done well and professionally, and you will be pleased with the new window installed in your home.

If you are determined to do the installation yourself, there are a few important steps to follow to get the job done right:

Step 1: Remove the old window, leaving the frame intact if possible. You can remove the window frame if it is damaged, but you should measure the frame to ensure that you purchase a window of the same measurements. Purchasing a window of the same size makes the installation process easier, as you don't need to make any alterations to the window frame. Make sure to get a pre-hung window that comes already installed on its frame.

Step 2: Get rid of any putty or caulking that is left on the window frame, as it could get in the way of your window installation.

Step 3: Insert your new window into the opening, and make sure that it is placed in the direct center of the opening. You can use wooden shims to ensure that your window has an even amount of space on every side, simply inserting them into the space between the wall and the window frame until they are evenly spaced. Make sure to insert shims from both the outside and the inside, as that will keep the window level on both sides of the frame.

Step 4: Use a bubble level to ensure that the window is completely level on all sides. Adjust as necessary until the window is level.

Step 5: Nail or screw the window in place. If you are using screws on a concrete wall, you will need to sink holes in the wall and fill them with wooden or plastic plugs to ensure that the screws take hold. Using either nails or screws on a wooden wall is fairly easy, but you should have a friend hold the window to ensure that it goes in completely straight.

Step 6: Do a final check to ensure that the window frame is still completely level, as nailing or screwing in the window frame often shifts the window slightly. Make any final adjustments to the window, and fill in the space between wall and frame with minimal expanding foam.

Step 7: Once the foam has dried, put a final layer of silicon or putty around the outside of the window frame. Let it dry before replacing the interior and exterior trim.

Good windows can lower your cooling and heating costs.

Do you want to lower your home's heating and cooling costs? One of the most effective methods is by installing windows and doors Toronto. Due to their materials and construction, replacement doors and windows can save you a small fortune on your utility bills. How much could a little draft through your current windows or doors affect your heating and cooling costs? Throughout the summer and winter, that draft can cause your home's heating and cooling systems to work overtime. And that can translate into significantly higher heating and cooling bills. Installing replacement windows and doors can be the perfect solution.
