Durban is by far the largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and the third largest city in the whole of South Africa. It forms part of the, now, eThekwini metropolitan municipality. Famous for being the busiest port in Southern Africa.
It is one of the most visited tourist destinations, along with Cape Town, because of it's superb beaches and warm climate. The municipality, including neighbouring towns, has a population of plus minus three and a half million people, making it the biggest city on the east coast of Africa. Stretching almost 2,300 square kilometers, it is much larger than other South African cities, resulting in a somewhat lower population density.
Being hilly, with a few flat areas, except in and around the cbd and the harbour area, the western suburbs off Hillcrest and Kloof are significantly higher above sea-level, reaching up to 850 metres in the community of Botha's Hill. Many gorges are found within the metropolitan area.
