It makes sense to not only watch the price of your gas and electricity bills but also try to cut down the amount of gas and electricity you use where ever possible. You'd be amazed at how easy it is to cut the amount of energy you use by following our simple guide.
1. Turn off office equipment when you're not using it
Overnight, at weekends and during bank holidays. Savings on just a single computer and monitor could be up to ?35 a year. Place stickers around your office to encourage staff to switch off and save.
2. Turn off office lights when not in use
There's no need for lights on in a room which no one is occupying - the store room, toilets and other low use areas. This can save on your electricity cost by as much as 15%. Make your staff aware that they need to turn off the lights - print out our staff awareness poster.
3. Turn off the taps and fix any drips or leaks
A constantly dripping tap can cost your business about ?400 per year. Make sure you turn off taps fully and fix any drips.
4. Turn down the thermostat by one degree
This small change could save you up to 8% on your company's heating bill.
5. Switch off appliances
Switch off all appliances at the plug rather than the appliance - even equipment on the standby function is using electricity - your photocopiers, microwave and TV for example. This can amount to a massive 6% of your energy usage.
6. Reduce the energy waste in your staff kitchen
Filling the kettle each time it's boiled means energy is wasted bringing the water to boiling point - only boil the water needed for the tea round. Make sure the fridge isn't full to the brim with old bits of staff lunches - make sure old food is thrown away and that air can circulate, this will help your fridge to run more efficiently.
7. Fit energy saving light bulbs
Fit energy saving light bulbs where you can. For strip and spot lights - only have the lights on that you really need. If your premises has large windows use as much of this natural light source as possible.
8. Check your timer clock
Try to minimize the amount you heat your premises when you're not there. You may be able to have the heating on for a maximum of only 30 minutes before your arrive at the premises or open up for work.
9. Close the doors
Encourage staff to shut doors - particularly exterior doors. You'd be amazed how many businesses waste a lot of money heating up the fresh air outside!
10. Turn down the air con
Look around and see if you have the air con and windows open at the same time. Try to make sure it's one or the other and not both. Air conditioning that's making the atmosphere very cold will also be costing you a lot of money.
