Any time I ask this question of anyone, they always get extremely defensive, saying that they don't use up too much electricity. The fact is that everyone ends up consuming too much electricity whether they know it or not. Let's look at a few things you may do without thinking that consume too much electricity without meaning to.
I am not trying to blame anyone, but I see this every time with women. Often a load of laundry will sit in the dryer for a couple of hours after the clothes are dry. At that point, people (including men) will head to the dryer, open the door and see that several of the clothes are wrinkly. Many people turn the dryer on again for another cycle, thinking that this will take the wrinkles out, rather than ironing the wrinkled clothes. Compared to an iron, a dryer consumes a huge amount of power, which is altogether wasted when your clothes are already dry.
Men have equally careless habits when it comes to squandering electricity. While women are able to do numerous things at the same time, men seem to have a very narrow focus sometimes. A man may be working in his workshop with lots lot lights on, and a radio playing, when he realizes he has to run to the hardware store for supplies, and dashes out leaving everything on. But there's a much worse problem than this. Forgetting all about the lights they left switched on, and the radio, a lot of men will go off to do something else for the rest of the day. At least, until they need to return to the garage for something and then they find out that everything is still on.
A prevalent bad habit is leaving lights switched on when they aren't needed. In the winter months, it's usual for people to switch lights on when they awaken in the morning because it is dark. Of course, you need the lights to see so it's not a big deal at that point. When the sun is out, wasteful power consumption starts. A lot of men and women forget that the lights are on to start with, which means they continue to be switched on until they leave the house. Hopefully, you're in the habit of checking all the lights to ensure they're off before you leave your home.
By being more sensible and careful about our use of power, we can do our part to help the environment and save a bit of money. Get used to switching off the lights every time you go out of a room. Avoid the temptation to use the dryer to smoothen the wrinkles out of the clothes that have dried. If you leave the workshop or basement, but plan on returning, turn everything off at any rate because there is a good chance you won't be going back in there for a while.
We all have careless habits that consume too much power, which costs us money out of our pockets but also puts more strain on the environment than is needed. A very good habit to develop is to always switch off the light when you exit a room. Furthermore, you should use the iron instead of turning the dryer back on. If you end up leaving the workshop or basement, but plan on returning, turn everything off in any case because there is a good chance you won't be going back in there soon.
