Family is pretty much everything to us. Our world revolves around them and their world revolves around us. They are the people that we are the closest to and the ones that we love, adore and care for more than words can describe. So knowing how to cope with rejection when it comes to family is the biggest issue because when our family rejects us for something that we love doing and are a part of, it really sucks. Rejection is a real bitch when it comes to family and I know that thousands of marketers will agree with me because at some point in their lives in one way of another, they will have experienced this from their other half. I agree there are cases where this doesn't happen, but unfortunately that cannot be said for the majority.
So, when it comes to family members knowing how to cope with rejection in the right way is what will help you instead of defeating you. Here is an example of your typical conversation between a couple when the guy has just joined an mlm business. In a nutshell, Jimbo will be introduced to the business by someone he knows and is informed of how great the products are and how awesome the compensation plan is. He attends his first presentation and gets some free samples to take home and try out.
He goes home, tells his wife Sarah who checks out the product and (let's assume Jimbo already has a good job and because his new, has no idea how to cope with rejection that will come his way), asks him "are you actually serious about doing this stuff? I mean I have heard about all this before and it doesn't end well". This is where Jimbo brings up the income potential trying to sway Sarah's mind and get her on board. She then brings up the job he already has, the job that is already paying their bills and day to day expenses. She then asks him are you really going to leave all that and start in this, this pyramid scam?" He tries to explain but it is of no use and instead she tuts at him, gives him a stare down and walks away. Sucks to be Jimbo wouldn't you agree?
This seriously affects Jimbo's mindset and thinking pattern and it isn't long before he quits and does what he does best. This is the case with most people and is also the reason why knowing how to cope with rejection from close ones is crucial. You see what Jimbo should have done, is not tell Sarah straight away but instead used a visual approach and took her along to say the third or fourth team meeting/presentation so she can say how the business has helped many others both financially and time wise. He could have also waited a while, kept his day job, and told her the moment he received the first payment cheque. Doing these will definitely produce a different outcome for you because the visual proof is present and all you have to do is get it in front of your other half.
How to cope with rejection when it comes to friends
This is another problem that many marketers face as it can result in destroyed friendships. It is not as personal or destructive as the family rejection, but is still on the same wave length. Because Jimbo does not how to cope with rejection he has no idea what to do when his friend Mike turns him down and thinks he is a right ass for being pushy and hesitant. It is because of Jimbo's actions, that now his 15 year old friendship with Mike is damaged and Mike will also spread the word with any mutual friends they have therefore preparing them in advance for when Jimbo approaches them.
If Jimbo knew how to cope with rejection he would have backed off as soon as Mike disapproved and then returned to him a later date. Or if he was making good money and things were working out for him after 6 months, Mike may even go to him and make enquiries as to how he can join Jimbo and become a part of the team. One reason why your friends may not join the first time you approach them is either because it is not the right time for them, or because they are skeptical and have heard about all of these 'pyramid scams' before. However returning back to them after 6 months when it may be the right time with some facts and visual evidence can result in a completely different outcome.
Dealing with rejection from family and friends is one of the biggest business and success killers for the majority of marketers trying to make a difference in their lives. It is one of the main reasons that put most people off and as a result they simply end up quitting on the spot or a couple weeks later. That is why knowing how to cope with rejection in the right way is one of the most important things you need to know if you want come out the other end as a winner and not a loser.
