Moroccan furniture and the Moroccan theme have become popular among designers. Interior decorators are always on the look-out for new and exciting trends. However, sometimes they realize that the old ways are the best. This is the case of the new tendency to designing homes using the old styles from Morocco.
If you are unfamiliar with this style of decorating you only have to imagine a scene from the Arabian nights. It is not hard to visualize a room layered with pillows and flowing fabrics covering almost every surface, exotic lamps, which cast strange glows onto every surface and low backless benches. Everything would feature color. You might even detect a spicy smell in the air coming from the exotic hookah pipe residing in the center of a carved cedar table.
If you are considering trying your own hand at decorating your house, or a part of the house in the Moroccan way, there are a number of things that you should know if you want to ensure that create a truly authentic room.
Color is going to be the key to your efforts. There should be lots of it, and it has to be everywhere. You cannot omit any wall or the ceiling. In Western decorating, experts usually advise you to have one feature wall. If you are doing a Moroccan room, every wall is going to be a feature wall. If want to make the room look and feel authentic, you have to be bold and daring. Consider using wall tiles or hang a carpet on the wall.
If you were to walk into a living room in most western styled homes, you would probably see a couch, an arm chair, two end tables and a coffee table. A Moroccan room would have many more variations. You might see a coffee style of table but instead of a couch and an armchair, there might be a long low upholstered bench. Poufs and ottomans are frequently found in Moroccan decor. Throw pillows would be all over the room and would be all different shapes and sizes.
Window coverings should be long and flowing. Your drapes should hang all the way to the floor even if the window does not. Avoid using blinds and tailored curtains. You want materials to bunch and flow, the more fabric the better. Use colorful cords and wide sashes to tie back the drapes. Tassels and braided finishes look the best. For a really wonderful look, consider adding a Moroccan window grill.
Doors should not be overlooked. It is pretty hard to have a completed room if there is a standard white door leading in or out of the room. You can buy all different styles and sizes of doors that will allow you to complete the room. Another idea would be to remove the traditional door and install a decorative archway instead thereby leaving the doorway open.
Mood is extremely important. When you enter a Victorian parlor, you get the impression that you should sit at the edge of your chair with your back straight. In a Moroccan room, you should have the desire to kick off your shoes and relax on the floor with an ottoman supporting your back.
Moroccan furniture should be as colorful and decorative as the materials that you use. You should get the impression that you have entered into an exotic and mysterious land. The room should require you to employ all of your senses to truly soak up the atmosphere.
