So, You Want To Be A Famous Singer. But What exactly do you want to achieve?
I was talking to a friend recently about a web site I was putting together and I'd been having a few problems so I asked his advice.
This was a new venture for me and although I had read about how to put a site together, I hadn't actually sat with a designer and done it.
I knew some of the basics, like getting your own domain, creating a good header and writing the copy. But there were a lot more things that had to be taken into consideration that I hadn't accounted for.
The designer created an awesome header and put my copy into the main page within only a couple of hours. Then I went back to him to add all the extra bits that I thought I might need.
This is where it began to get a bit complicated. You see, he asked me what it was I wanted to achieve.
Uhm...to set up a nice web site?
Well, yes that was the aim, but that wasn't what he meant.
What he meant was, what was I wanting each extra link to do? Why were they there? This was something I hadn't thought about.
He suggested that I come back when I knew what it was I wanted to achieve and then he could put the necessary bits of coding into place.
I was feeling a little bit out of my depth here. I hate not knowing what I'm doing.
This is where the conversation with my friend comes in. You see he's quite knowledgeable when it comes to the technical side of web sites and he basically asked the same thing. "What do i want to achieve?"
Brilliant, that's what I really wanted to hear!
Anyway, he then began to explain to me that each box and link on the page was there for a reason and it needed to know where it was linking to and why it was linking to that next thing.
These were all very important parts that went in to making up the the site. And without these things being put into place, in the right order, the site wouldn't work correctly. Quite logical really.
This got me thinking. Setting up a web site could be compared to setting up as a professional singer.
You need to work out exactly what it is you want to achieve.
There are definite elements needed if you want to be successful in the music business. Miss any of them out and you're going to fail.
Being good at singing just isn't enough. Having good solid agent contacts isn't enough. Buying a few backing tracks isn't enough, especially if you want to be taken seriously.
You need to know why you're doing things, how you should be doing those things and in what order they need to be done. There is a logical order to piece a pro act together even before you even think of approaching any agents.
Just like the web site, if you don't do it correctly, you're wasting your time.
So i'll ask you again, as a pro singer, "What exactly do you want to achieve?"
By the way, my web site got setup correctly because I was shown how to do it by someone that was much more knowledgeable than me. Someone that had been doing that sort of stuff for a lot of years.
Makes you think doesn't it?
