At the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, Microsoft Corp, the software giant had introduced the next generation of Windows phones called the Windows Phone 7 Series. Further, in the recently held Web developers' conference in Las Vegas, the company had provided few details about the new operating system and the devices based on it.
It is reported that the Windows Phone 7 will have Zune like user interface with full Xbox LIVE integration for providing best end-user experience. In addition, the new devices will support multi-touch and run Silverlight, which means that new games and apps will easily run on the device.
Various analysts suggest that the 6.5 version of Microsoft's Windows Mobile could not revive the plummeting market share in the mobile operating system. However, it is predicted that the new version can be a final chance to get it right" in the rapidly-growing mobile market.
Up till now, the operating system has accumulated positive feedbacks from various analysts and reviewers, but it lacks some essential features that are discussed in the feature below.
No cut-copy-paste function
The new mobile operating system lacks cut-copy-paste feature. However, the company has replaced the function with a new feature called single-tap action. Meanwhile, the company has confirmed that its own Office applications will not support copy and paste feature. Microsoft said that developers should not expect to have access to a clipboard to allow users to copy and paste. The early models of Apple's iPhone also missed the same feature.
Multitasking is missing
Similar to Apple's iPad, the Windows 7 mobile devices also lack multitasking completely. It is suggested that the multi-tasking is largely restricted in the devices, hence users could not access more than one third-party application at a time. Further, these devices would not run multiple applications concurrently and switch between them. Similarly, Apple's iPhone 3GS also lacks true multitasking.
No support for Adobe Flash
Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 will not offer support for Adobe Flash, hence people will not be able to visit multimedia files that require Flash support. However, the software giant has indicated that Adobe is working on Flash version especially for Windows Phone 7. Also, the device will support Microsoft's Silverlight that offers functionalities similar to Adobe Flash.
Older apps
Microsoft has designed a new interface for the new devices; hence it seems that the older applications will not be able to run on the new operating system. But, the company has over 140,000 apps on its App Marketplace, which have to be reset for the forthcoming devices.
In addition, the company said that only manufacturers and OEMs would be able to install memory cards, but not the consumers. Therefore, similar to Apple's devices, the devices will lack user-replaceable memory slot.
No upgrade for present Smartphones
The Redmond giant has announced that the hardware requirements for the Windows Phone 7 upgrade are difficult to meet, therefore handsets running on present Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system could not be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 7 operating system. The company added that the new device has too many buttons which could not satisfy the criteria.
