Often referred to as the “vacation jewel” of Florida, St. George Island offers more than twenty five glorious miles of white sandy beaches, making it a most desirable place for vacationing. Strategically isolated from the hustle and bustle of busy cities like Miami, this barrier island is situated in “The Forgotten Coast”, a breathtaking habitat rich in preserved public lands. Hiking, birding, fishing and water sports are just few of the many attractions in the wondrous landscapes of St. George Island.

St. George Island is located at the far east end of the island, the place where you will discover approximately nine miles of natural, undeveloped shoreline, sandy coves, majestic dunes and salt marshes. It also features a park with a network of trails primed for hiking, observation platforms, and boardwalks for quite strolls. If you are fond of wildlife, then St. George Island makes an excellent option for vacationing. Bird watching is a popular pastime and it is not uncommon for tourists to encounter numerous migrating birds that use this magnificent island paradise as a stopover in route to their destination north or south. There have also been rare sightings of snow owls and flamingos in St. George Island.

St. George Island is home to some of the most beautiful and untarnished beaches on the Gulf Coast. It offers miles upon miles of spacious beaches, perfect for tanning and shelling, while its crystal clear waters encourage swimming and exciting offshore fishing. On the mainland you will find Historic Apalachicola, which boasts more than 900 historic homes and buildings. Originally established in 1831, Apalachicola has been voted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America’s Distinctive Destinations. The downtown district of St. George Island can be conveniently toured on foot, featuring a vast selection of waterfront parks, quant shops, markets and dining opportunities. All it takes is a single trip and you will discover why so many people consider St. George Island the perfect vacation getaway.

If you would like to incorporate some adventure into your vacation, rest assured because sail and powerboats are widely available for rent. You also have the option to rent yourself a kayak to explore the outer bays and inlets where you just might spot a dolphin surfing through the ocean or a bald eagle flying overhead. St. George Island is also ideal for catching fish and crabs, a place where even the rookie fisherman can bring home a nice batch for an evening meal. If you are a die hard vacationer and have decided that cooking is out of the question, don’t worry because there are plenty of eateries that serve some of the freshet seafood you can find. Take in a gourmet dinner surfside or have dinner on the bay while watching the sunset.

Miami may be known as the party capital of Florida, but St. George Island is not to be outdone with nightclubs that feature live music and billiards. Whether you are the more energetic type or prefer to relax, this beautiful place can provide the atmosphere to guarantee that your vacation is one of pure bliss.
