Obesity is becoming a tremendous epidemic in pets. Cats as well as dogs are quickly getting heavier and heavier. This is not healthy. Obesity in cats can result in liver problems, joint issues, strain on the body and a higher risk of diabetes. Both cats and dogs must have minimal fat on their bodies and you must be able to see their spine and several of their muscles. If you can't, your pet may be overweight.
The first thing you must do is bring the cat to the vet to ensure that there is nothing physically wrong with him that is making him gain pounds. A thyroid problem or diabetes are two common diseases which can cause a cat to gain weight. In case your cat suffers one of these problems, then the vet will give you medicine and the cat should begin losing weight as they get better.
If there is nothing physical producing the weight gain, then you will need to help your cat reduce weight the same process we do it- exercise and diet! First, you must adjust the cat's diet. Consult your veterinarian as to what your cat's daily calories should be and purchase a good, nutritious cat food which will provide this for him. Fillers such as corn render empty calories, making your cat feel hungrier instead of filling him up. No need to get him on dietary food, but you can if you want. So long as the food is rich in protein and low in carbohydrates, then you should be fine.
After that, you must make sure that your cat is exercising a lot. If your overweight cat is generally lazy, then try to play some games with him. Most cats like to have fun with lasers and pursue them around the house. Be imaginative, you do not need to use hundreds of dollars on costly cat toys.
