Many localities require you get a permit to install a fence on your property and if you belong to a home owner’s association you better get permission from them as well. Also, without a set of plans you will be guessing as to how much material you actually need and you may find yourself midway through you project and out of materials and out of money.

Next, it is important to know where you frost line is and to dig your holes well below this level so when the ground freezes it does not up heave your posts. And, speaking of posts, it is vital that you accurately locate each hole and align your posts perfectly with one another or your completed fence will look horrible.

Digging holes. You can use a clamshell digger to dig your postholes but this is a very hard fork and if you got plenty holes or you have hard ground it could rent a power auger but you normally have to be two people to run it. In most areas you need to have the postholes below the frost line to make sure that the post will stay in place when the ground starts to heaves due to the frost. As a guideline you should bury about half of the corner posts and about a third of the line post underground.

Start with the end posts. Allow them to set up and then stretch a string from one to the other to create a perfect line from one post to the other. Drive a stake every 6 to 8 feet along this line and make sure you measure carefully so the posts are equally spaced.

Align you posts with the string and make sure they are level vertically and brace them while the cement sets up. Give them a couple of days to become secure before adding the actual fencing. It is a good idea to secure your fencing with screws instead of nailing against the post and possibly working them loose.

Make sure you seal your completed fence so it will last for many years. It is important that you get a good set of directions for building a fence to make sure your project looks professional and will stand up to years of use.
